About the Book

Based on actual events, The Camping Trip that Changed America shares the story of how President Theodore Roosevelt’s camping trip in Yosemite Valley, along with naturalist John Muir, led to the creation of protected lands within the United States. It spurred a life-long friendship between two men from different backgrounds that shared a common interest and a deep love for the wilderness.

As a national parks enthusiast, I enjoy learning about and sharing stories like this one, and facts about the parks. Books about national parks are also one of my go-to-gifts! Prior to reading this book, I hadn’t heard about this famous duo’s camping trip—what a wonderful, little-known story!

The Camping Trip that Changed America offers a child-sized bite of history about the creation of our national parks. If you’re looking to introduce your little explorer to these iconic landmarks, I highly recommend starting with this picture book. Not only does it introduce kids to key historical figures who helped establish our nation’s federally-protected lands, but it showcases how people who appear to be so different can still share common interests and become friends.

To truly appreciate our national parks, and vast areas of our nation’s protected wilderness, nothing beats visiting in person. However, the beautiful illustrations within this book, from award-winning illustrator Mordicai Gerstein, does a wonderful job of capturing the immensity and grandeur of features like Half Dome and El Capitan.

On a side note, read the Author’s Notes at the end of the book to learn more about Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, and America’s protected wilderness.
