About the Book

Footnotes from the Most Fascinating Museums: Stories and Memorable Moments from People Who Love Museums by New Yorker cartoonist and author Bob Eckstein. Bob Eckstein is a delightful journey into the heart of museum culture, offering a unique perspective through the eyes of passionate museum enthusiasts. Eckstein, known for his witty illustrations and keen observations, brings his signature style to this collection of stories, anecdotes, and insights from individuals deeply connected to the world of museums.

This delightful twist on art history shows these institutes in a way never before seen, illustrated in a lush and idealized style. The more than 75 museums featured include the biggest and boldest (MoMA, the Whitney) and some more offbeat (Museum of Bad Art, the Museum of Jurassic Technology) names spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico—including those specializing in art, natural history, and academia. One-hundred fifty-five original pieces of artwork each illustrate a story about the museum or showcase a particular work of art in its collection.

Eckstein’s writing is engaging and humorous, making even the most arcane museum trivia entertaining. His illustrations peppered throughout the book add a whimsical touch, enhancing the storytelling experience. What sets this book apart (even more) is its focus on personal experience and memories. It is a love letter to museums and museum-goers, filled with lush and whimsical illustrations, paired with stories and anecdotes—through interviews and narratives—from a diverse array of museum lovers, including curators, historians, artists, and visitors. Each chapter unveils a different museum, from iconic institutions to hidden gems near and far, allowing readers to vicariously explore the wonders of these cultural repositories.
